Take Inventory in Kids Backcountry Match Continues Sept. 24-26



KEY LARGO, Florida Keys – For over 20 years, the Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge has connected community and families with fishing and fundraising. The 2021 tournament is presented by the Rotary Club of Key Largo and is designed to test anglers of all ages Friday through Sunday, September 24-26.

The popular catch-and-release tournament raises funds for scholarships given to Florida Keys students through the nationwide Take Stock in Children scholarship program. The income from tournament registrations as well as silent auctions and raffle sales are an integral part of the family fun event.

A public kick-off party for anglers and supporters is planned for Friday, September 24th at Doc’s Diner, mile marker 99.7 in Key Largo. The event usually offers bar drinks and snacks from 5:30 p.m., followed by a captain’s and angler’s meeting.

Anglers can head to the shallows to fish for trout, redfish and snooks once the kick-off festivities last through 4pm on Sunday, September 26th. the Key Largo Civic Club on 209 Bay Drive.

Trophies are awarded to overall winners in the adult and junior backcountry, winners of the junior and children’s divisions and the best professional guide, as well as for the largest combined total species and the largest fish of each species.

Entrance fees on or before September 23 are US $ 135 per adult angler, US $ 60 per junior angler, and US $ 30 for children under the age of 12. The fees include social events. Non-anglers wishing to attend Friday and Sunday social events can purchase tickets for $ 20 and $ 45, respectively. After September 23, fees will increase by $ 25 for anglers and $ 5 per night for social events.

The 2021 event is limited to 70 anglers, so the organizers recommend early registration.

The proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for Upper Keys college students and adult professionals. Students work with a mentor between seventh and twelfth grades to qualify. The State of Florida will assemble the funds raised to provide the scholarships.
