Out Late: Dancing at The Silver Spur

Maine may not be the country’s biggest country western passion for music, but that doesn’t mean The Silver Spur cannot claim the cloak of a country western passion for Maine.

It doesn’t seem to dampen the excitement of its regulars – people who come from all over the region and bring their partners (and yes, a barrage of cowboy hats) to learn line dance every week and step on their heels every weekend for dance nights .

In the heart of the spacious center is the spacious dance floor, which is flanked by numerous seating areas and overlooked by the stage. On the latter, you’ll find local and national live country bands on a regular basis; Performers like Don Nickerson & Country Mist, Cowboy Billy, Buckstop and Mainely Country. All of them tend to play a mix of hugely popular country hits, alternative country, lesser known honky tonk, and some original songs – most of them on the livelier side (better to dance to) but with some Americana ballads and bluegrass mixed in.

Dances usually take place on Saturday nights (and occasionally Sunday afternoons) and cost $ 10 per person. Line dance classes are held on Monday evenings and cost $ 5 per person. There is no on-site beverage service so think ahead and BYOB about both the dances and the lessons.

Saturday nights have become so popular with groups that the club has started renting the space out for reservations for larger parties. The hall is suitable for both socializing and dancing and is well suited for guests who need a break from dancing or prefer not to dance at all – they can take a load off and relax in the seating on the ground floor or on the balcony Take grab a snack or two and sit at the pool table that has no shortage of players ready to take on a challenge between songs.
