Hidden Apple Watch and iPhone Setting Might Save Your Ears

Apple has been on an ongoing quest to help us improve our lives – the iPhone and Apple Watch are now helping us with our sleep, training and even our hearing.

Did you know that iPhone and Apple Watch have a feature called Headphone Messaging? This security feature automatically sends an alert to your Apple Watch and iPhone so you know you’ve been exposed to harmful sound levels for too long.

For example, if you have been listening to sounds over 80 decibels for over 40 hours in less than seven days, you will receive a message that you are turning down the volume.

The next time you use your headphones, your iPhone or Apple Watch automatically sets the volume to a lower level. You can, of course, turn up the volume if you want, but this is a smart way to keep you in check and your hearing healthy.

There are many ways to activate headphone messages, and if you are worried about your beep, you can activate this function here.

Turn on headphone notifications with your Apple Watch

You can quickly turn on headphone messaging with your Apple Watch. First, make sure your Apple Watch has at least watchOS 7.4 installed. You can check it by going to Settings> General> About. It will be below Version. Once done, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Press Digital crown on your Apple Watch.
  2. Press Settings icon.
  3. Scroll down and press Availability.
  4. Scroll down again until you find it Headphone notifications.
  5. Activate Headphone notifications if it is not already on.

Navigating your Apple Watch can be a little tricky. Fortunately, you can also perform these steps on your iPhone. Here’s how you do it:

  1. open See app on iPhone.
  2. Go to Availability.
  3. Scroll down and change Headphone notifications on.

Turn on headphone notifications without an Apple Watch

Not everyone has an Apple Watch, but luckily you can still use headphone messaging with just your iPhone or iPod touch. You must have at least iOS 14.5 installed on your iPhone. You can check which version you have by going to Settings app> General> About. Now follow these steps:

  1. open Settings app on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
  2. choose Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Push Headphone security.
  4. Shift Headphone notifications on if this is not already the case.

Want to learn more about your hearing?

You can take your hearing health a step further with the Health app. You can check things like headphones and environmental noise levels for the last seven days to make sure you are not exceeding the decibel levels recommended by the World Health Organization. You can do this on both your iPhone and iPod touch.

  1. open Health app.
  2. Press Browse tab in the lower right corner.
  3. choose Hearing.

You’ll see all the hearing information your iPhone and Apple Watch have collected all this time. You can see how many noise messages you have received and learn a little more about headphones and hearing health.
